Does ChatGPT mean “goodbye homework”?

Billionaire Twitter owner Elon Musk tweeted ‘goodbye homework’ amid concerns that tools such as ChatGPT will make it impossible for teachers to set homework for students.

The AI technology is making it easier than ever to get basic essays and responses to questions that students could gain passes for. Below is an example that I tried in relation to a British GCSE Shakespeare question.

Critics claim that Hamlet is a play with a major tragic flaw – its main character.

‘The inaction of Hamlet coupled with his melancholy attitude ultimately lead to his demise’

How far do you agree with this statement?

ChatGPT outputted:

The response is perhaps brief, basic and lacking in detail but the grammar is excellent and it provides a solid basis for an answer and it shows what the tool can do (and may improve upon as it becomes more powerful).

There are reports that education authorities such at in New York are now blocking ChatGPT with billionaire Elon Musk tweeting “goodbye homework” – see below…

Elon Musk replying ‘goodbye homework’ to a report that the New York City education department is blocking ChatGPT on school devices

In the UK, England exam regulator Ofqual and the Department of Education are investigating whether the chatbot can be used to cheat. Geoff Barton, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, told the BBC: “We’re aware of concerns that ChatGPT may be used by some pupils to write answers and pass this off as their own work, although we have not directly received reports of problems from our members thus far.”

This is likely to change in the coming weeks!
